Updated: Feb 13

For Apprentice Wednesday during National Apprenticeship Week 2025, we’re shining a spotlight on Angus Aston, an Apprentice at CEF Worthing. Angus’ journey into his apprenticeship is unique- starting out in music performance before discovering his passion for the electrical industry. Now, he’s thriving in a role that challenges him, keeps him engaged, and offers real career prospects.

Why did you apply for an apprenticeship?

I applied to this role as the job really appealed to my interests and previous work experience, I had been a customer at CEF during my time working as a smart home electrician, so I was attracted to an apprenticeship there to see what it was like on the other side of the counter. Before I applied with EDA Apprenticeships I studied for 2 years in college as a Music Performance and Production student, I also had various jobs such as working in cafes, pharmaceutical production companies and shadowing tradesmen like plumbers and electricians.

What do you enjoy about your role?

There are so many things I enjoy about my role, but if I had to pinpoint my favourite I would probably say that the work style and my responsibilities perfectly fit my personality and skill set. I find the work satisfying and I love the feeling of completing tasks and interacting with customers, I have said since the start that this is my favourite job I've ever had and I don’t see that changing at all.

I am finding the job ever more interesting as time goes on because I am consistently learning more and being given more responsibilities. I have never felt so involved with a company this quickly and that brings a really meaningful sense of feeling important.

What have you learnt?

One of the most useful practical lessons I’ve learned during this apprenticeship is personal responsibility, if a customer on the counter or on the phone deals with me personally it is my job to help them out myself. Of course, my coworkers are always happy to help and I will never be made to feel overwhelmed, but it is nice to have that individual sense of urgency at work that makes the role feel challenging in a positive way.

Any plans for the future?

My future career goal is to stay at CEF full time after the apprenticeship ends as I truly adore this job and I am very grateful for EDA for the opportunity I have been given. I would recommend EDA apprenticeships as they do an excellent job of checking up on you to make sure you’re happy and comfortable, whilst also not distracting you from your work and overwhelming you.

If you’re considering an apprenticeship, take it from Angus—it could be the best decision you make!
