Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers—they offer career-changing opportunities at any stage of life. For Martin Davies, a Water Treatment Apprentice at Northumbrian Water, making the switch after 31 years in the working world was a big decision. But now, he’s thriving in a new role, gaining valuable skills, and proving that it’s never too late to start something new.
Taking the Leap into a New Career
For 25 years, Martin worked in the lighting transformer industry, progressing from Operator to Electrician. But after decades in the same field, he felt ready for a change. Making the switch wasn’t without challenges—financial concerns and the idea of going “back to school” were at the forefront of his mind. However, with the support of his family, he took the leap and hasn’t looked back since.
A New Learning Experience
Returning to education after so many years was daunting at first, but Martin found the training sessions engaging and relevant. The coursework can be intense at times, but he has quickly adapted, building his knowledge and confidence along the way.
One of the biggest surprises has been the supportive team environment. Working alongside younger apprentices, Martin has found a strong sense of camaraderie. He never feels out of place—instead, he feels fully integrated as part of the team.
No Regrets, Only Excitement for the Future
Now well into his apprenticeship, Martin has no regrets about making the career switch. He is loving his new role and is excited about the future, hoping to secure a full-time position once he completes his qualification.
His story is a fantastic example of how apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers—they’re for anyone ready to take on a new challenge.
Thinking about changing careers? An apprenticeship could be the perfect opportunity!
